Charleroi is the largest city and municipality of Wallonia, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Charleroi had a total population of 201,300. The agglomeration has a population of around 500,000 inhabitants, which makes it the fifth largest agglomeration of the country. The inhabitants are called Carolor?giens or simply Carolos.

Charleroi was founded in 1666, which is relatively late compared to the other cities in Belgium. The Spanish who ruled the Low Countries in the 17th century built a fortification close to the village of Charnoy.
